About the Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival (端午节), falls on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar — typically in June on the Gregorian calendar. In 2026, it is celebrated on June 19th.

With a history spanning over 2,000 years, the festival is one of China's four major traditional festivals, alongside the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), Qingming Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival. It was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.

The Legend Behind the Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival commemorates the life and death of Qu Yuan (c. 340–278 BC), a renowned poet and minister of the ancient state of Chu during the Warring States period. A patriot and scholar, Qu Yuan was deeply devoted to his country but was exiled by corrupt court officials. In despair over the invasion of his homeland, he drowned himself in the Miluo River on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.

According to legend, local villagers raced out in their boats to search for him, throwing zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves) into the water to prevent fish from eating his body. This act of remembrance evolved into the two most iconic traditions of the festival: dragon boat racing and eating zongzi.

Festival Traditions

🐉 Dragon Boat Racing (赛龙舟)

Dragon boat racing is the most dramatic and exhilarating tradition of the festival. Teams of paddlers sit in long, narrow boats carved and painted to resemble dragons, racing to the beat of a drum. The sport has spread worldwide, with international dragon boat races held in over 80 countries, from Canada to Australia, Singapore to the United Kingdom. 🍙 Zongzi — Sticky Rice Dumplings (粽子)

Zongzi are pyramid-shaped dumplings made of glutinous rice stuffed with various fillings — such as red bean paste, dates, pork, or salted egg yolks — and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. They are steamed or boiled and enjoyed by families across China. The flavor and style of zongzi vary from region to region: sweet in the north, savory in the south, each with its own cherished recipe passed down through generations.

🌿 Customs and Traditions

• Hanging mugwort and calamus — Fresh herbs are hung on doorways to ward off evil spirits and insects during the summer season.
• Drinking realgar wine (雄黄酒) — A traditional medicinal wine believed to detoxify the body and protect against disease.
• Wearing fragrant sachets (香囊) — Children wear embroidered sachets filled with aromatic herbs to bring good luck and ward off illness.
• Egg-balancing game — At noon on Duanwu, people attempt to stand eggs on their ends, a fun folk tradition said to be possible only at that exact moment.
